| OCCURRENCE DETAILS SUBMITTED TO RAAUS: The pilot was a solo student flying circuits, in a Sportstar, on runway 14 (into wind runway) with several other aircraft. Another aircraft, a VH registered twin engine Baron, was conducting flying training circuits on runway 03 with student and instructor onboard. After several circuits the pilot of the Sportstar conducted another touch and go on runway 14. When they were airborne over the intersection with runway 03 they saw the Barron pass below them on the ground on that runway.
Pilots are reminded of the importance of "alerted see and avoid" principles as provided in CAAP 166-01(4) and the use of standard radio calls to avoid proximity events at non-controlled airports. |

| OCCURRENCE DETAILS SUBMITTED TO RAAUS: The pilot was performing a precautionary search and landing. On the third pass and final pass of landing area they decided grass was too high to land but instead of pulling up and gaining altitude they turned left at low altitude to have a quick look in a paddock alongside which had not scoped out. This resulted in the aircraft colliding with a power line and impacting the ground.
The pilot has recognised the dangers of low level operation away from airports and prepared airstrips and will complete Low Level flight training with a RAAus CFI prior to completing any further out landings in paddocks. |

| OCCURRENCE DETAILS SUBMITTED TO RAAUS: The aircraft was on late final for runway 24 and the pilot under instruction observed a flock of Galah's on the ground approximately 100 metres in front of the aircraft slightly to the left. As the aircraft continued the landing and began to flare, the flock of birds took flight and traversed from left to right directly in front of the aircraft at a height of approximately 10 feet. The aircraft flew through the flock of birds. Shortly thereafter a loud thump was heard from the rear of the aircraft. The Pilot under instruction landed the aircraft and during the taxi back, observed a single Galah in the middle of the runway approximately where the thump had been heard. The aircraft was parked and a visual inspection showed that there was no damage. The pilots then went to the location of the bird, still on the ground, to assess its condition. A short distance from the bird, it took flight in a normal manner apparently unaffected by the event.
Birds are listed as a hazard at YCFN in ERSA. RAAus continues to monitor bird strike and wildlife reports at aerodromes to ensure correct ERSA/NOTAM information is in place and to enable reporting to the aerodrome proprietor. |

| OCCURRENCE DETAILS SUBMITTED TO RAAUS: A pilot was queued as # 2 for takeoff on a runway and the aircraft lined up ahead transmitted to the effect that he intended to do a “turn back” after takeoff and requested if the other pilot wanted to go or would they wait. The pilot lined up as #2 replied indicating they would hold until whatever the other aircraft was doing was complete.
The first aircraft took off normally and shortly after turning close cross-wind, commenced a turn back towards the field. A transmission was made indicating the aircraft was turning back and intended to land in the reciprocal direction after which a touch and go on that runway would be performed. Once the touch and go was complete, the pilot of the second aircraft lined up and departed.
RAAus reminds members of the dangers of a turn back at low altitude, even while conducting simulation of engine failures and that operations at non-controlled aerodromes must be conducted with consideration of other airport users. CAAP 166 -01(4) provides guidance as to the conduct of engine failure simulation and appropriate airport circuit procedures and that all flights must be conducted to ensure safe management of aircraft at all times.
The pilot of the aircraft has been reminded of their responsibilities to avoid potential conflicting operations at the airport, which is a high activity airport. |

| OCCURRENCE DETAILS SUBMITTED TO RAAUS: During flight, the electric trim wound fully nose up and could only be overpowered with the strength of both hands. The trim could only be centralised by using the buttons on the passengers control stick. The trim attempted to wind fully nose up at least half a dozen times in the next half hour. Review identified that the cause of the trim change was likely due to the passenger resting a clipboard on the control stick activating the trim button. |

| OCCURRENCE DETAILS SUBMITTED TO RAAUS: On removing battery for charging it was found that the positive battery cable had been chaffing on the battery box compartment which is aluminium and attached to the main airframe. It had worn almost to the bare wire and the aircraft has only flown 20 hours since new. This information was forwarded to the Australian agent and no similar cases have been identified. |

| OCCURRENCE DETAILS SUBMITTED TO RAAUS: The pilot was conducting circuits in a tailwheel building confidence as a new tailwheel pilot. On take-off from one of the circuits the pilot realised they would not have enough room to clear trees at the end of the runway and elected to land. The pilot braked too hard and the aircraft flipped over on its back and was written off. The pilot suffered only minor scratches and bruise and is undergoing remedial training prior to flying in command again. Flight Operations mentored the pilot on decision making and the use of go around points. |

| OCCURRENCE DETAILS SUBMITTED TO RAAUS: The cockpit throttle lever stops do not provide full travel necessary to achieve normal idle speed and full power. New throttle cables supplied by the manufacturer had been fitted to the aircraft. During setting up of the carburettors IAW Rotax 912 MM, it became apparent that full power could not be achieved after the idle speed had been set correctly. Consequently, if the throttle cables were adjusted to allow full power setting at the carburettors, then the idle speed was excessively high. |

| OCCURRENCE DETAILS SUBMITTED TO RAAUS: The aircraft was prepared for 30 mins of circuits with owner. The first dual landing of the day was a firm touchdown where the left side tension rod on the undercarriage pulled out of the tube causing the leg to collapse. The aircraft swung off the runway onto the grass on the left wing tip. |

| OCCURRENCE DETAILS SUBMITTED TO RAAUS: During a solo navigation exercise, the student became unsure of their position and conducted a precautionary landing in a field. The student is commended for their decision making, ensuring the aircraft was safely landed at a known location and student was safe. A debrief was conducted and the situation was discussed for learning opportunities and any future flights. |

| OCCURRENCE DETAILS SUBMITTED TO RAAUS: The pilot of a Lightwing was flying from Evans Head and was inbound to Ballina for Runway 06. At the start of base leg, they heard the CA/GRO call a TBM aircraft several times as it entered the runway to depart. The pilot heard no response from the TBM. CA/GRO alerted the Lightwing to the TBM departing. The pilot believes the separation was adequate because they were alerted to their presence and they could also see the TBM. Pilots are reminded to ensure the correct frequency is selected, which ensures clear communications as outlined in CAAP 166 |

| OCCURRENCE DETAILS SUBMITTED TO RAAUS: The left wing stalled and the aircraft went into a spinning dive from 500ft AGL. The pilot struggled to regain control and by time of recovery the aircraft was below tree line with the left wing down. The pilot aimed for gap in trees, however the left wing impacted the ground and tree. The tail section tore off on another tree. Review of this occurrence identified that the pilot was inspecting cattle on the ground at the time of the occurrence. Pilots are reminded of the importance of avoiding distraction as this occurrence could have resulted in a fatal outcome. Pilots conducting inspection work on farms, utility, mustering or spotting operations are encouraged to complete a utility endorsement and additional training to equip them with the required skills to perform these functions safely. |
