OCCURRENCE DETAILS SUBMITTED TO RAAUS: Operation at a Non-Controlled Airport, An aircraft under dual instruction, flying circuits on runway (RWY) 17. Another aircraft indicated they were taxing for runups RWY 35. The aircraft conducting dual training on RWY 17 conducted a full stop and backtrack on RWY 17, the Instructor exited the aircraft and sent the student on RWY 17 for solo CCTS. The Aircraft at the runup bay for RWY 35 broadcasted taxiing for RWY 35 and called lining up for RWY 35 for a local flight. The Instructor on the ground made a broadcast there was an aircraft on RWY 17, with no reply the aircraft on RWY 35 rolled and departed the CCT to the Northwest. The student on RWY 17 went wide from the base position avoiding conflict on the respective crosswind/base leg. |

OCCURRENCE DETAILS SUBMITTED TO RAAUS: Before coming in to land on a private airstrip the pilot had a briefing from the owner to confirm strip length and elevation and ideal speed on approach over trees. The pilot crossed the trees with full flaps and continued descending to strip. At about 20-25ft AGL the PIC eased stick back aiming to level off at about 6-8 feet to 'float' for touchdown. At approx. 10ft there was a very sudden drop onto the strip giving a very hard landing. The aircraft slid for about 50-70 metres before coming to a stop stay on the strip, having turned 90 degrees to the right. The aircraft suffered significant damage. Review of the occurrence identified that the pilot had limited experience in the aircraft and was not familar with the airfield. Windsheer was also considered to be a possible factor. RAAus reminds members of the importance carrying out dual flight training when transitioning to a new aircraft type and it is recommended to seek more advanced training with an instructor in short-field operations prior to operating a new aircraft type into more challenging airfields. |

OCCURRENCE DETAILS SUBMITTED TO RAAUS: During the approach to land at a private airfield, the pilot overshot the runway during the base to final turn. The pilot then attempted to pull the aircraft back onto the centreline during which the right wing stalled. The pilot was able to add some power and rudder, however had insufficient altitude to recover before impacting terrain. The aircraft suffered serious damage and the pilot sustained minor injuries. Pilots are reminded of the importance of avoiding overcorrection during the base to final turn which may result in a stall/spin accident, often with fatal outcomes. All members are urged to review the RAAus Loss of Control series, available from the RAAus website which covers a number of scenarios where loss of control events occur. Loss of control events are the most common cause of fatal accident in aviation. |

OCCURRENCE DETAILS SUBMITTED TO RAAUS: Shortly after take-off, climb performance was sluggish and engine started to run rough. The pilot levelled-off, reduced rpm, and landed without incident. Review of the aircraft identified that the exhaust had cracked where it went into the muffler from the number 1 cylinder. This caused exhaust fumes to be ingested through the the filters to the carburetor which caused the engine to run rough. The exhaust was an original part manufactured in 2014. A new exhaust system and air filters were fitted with no further issues. The aircraft was then returned to service. |

OCCURRENCE DETAILS SUBMITTED TO RAAUS: On the third flight of the day at the airfield, after conducting a start up and engine run up checks as per the POH, the aircraft was taxied for the runway to conduct a training flight to the North. The aircraft did not perform as expected as the conditions for the given day were hotter then previous flights. An aborted take-off was conducted by the instructor, the engine was shut down and heavy braking was applied. However the aborted take-off actions were conducted too late and there was insufficient distance to come to a complete stop. The aircraft ran into a fence and flipped over inverted. The Instructor and student completed all actions required, vacated the aircraft while upside down, self-extracting and were driven to hospital.
Assessment of the conditions of the day determined the take off distance required was not available at the private strip. |

OCCURRENCE DETAILS SUBMITTED TO RAAUS: The aircraft was above cloud base at the time at 8500 and entered the control airspace heading towards Tamworth. As the aircraft entered the pilot was contacted by air traffic control. As the pilot was not able to descend due weather, he was granted clearance to transit controlled airspace without holding a controlled airspace endorsement.
Outcome: Member educated on the requirements of conducting flights on top of cloud and referred to VFRG for further reading. Pilot was also reminded that he should not enter controlled airspace without holding a controlled airspace endorsement and without receiving prior permission from ATC. |

OCCURRENCE DETAILS SUBMITTED TO RAAUS: A mower/machine went out to do some weed spraying. A message was sent to the pilot at the time of the machine going out to the runway. The pilot replied that the aircraft would be operating shortly. The pilot aborted two landings because of the machine. Standard downwind radio calls were given. |

OCCURRENCE DETAILS SUBMITTED TO RAAUS: During a dual instructional flight the aircraft experienced an engine failure. They tried to turn back to the field when they realised they were too low and about to hit a tree, the instructor lowered the flaps to full to try and bump over the tree and at that point the aircraft tipped on its side and clipped a few trees then came to rest where it did amongst the large tree. The instructor and student were able to exit the aircraft. |

OCCURRENCE DETAILS SUBMITTED TO RAAUS: The pilot was on final when they identified another aircraft taking off in the opposite direction. No radio calls were heard from the aircraft prior to takeoff. The pilot diverted to the left of track in order to prevent a potential collision and continued another approach to land. The registration of the aircraft involved was unable to be confirmed so no further follow-up could take place. Pilots are reminded of the importance of alerted see and avoid principles, including the conduct of a thorough lookout and maintaining radio calls in accordance with mandatory requirements. |

OCCURRENCE DETAILS SUBMITTED TO RAAUS: Whilst conducting circuit training on runway 05 at Gawler, the aircraft breached the western boundary of Edinburgh airspace for about 35 seconds and intruded by about 300 meters. The instructor completed a be-brief with the CFI in relation to the incident and was reminded to use ground based references to ensure that future breaches are avoided. |

OCCURRENCE DETAILS SUBMITTED TO RAAUS: During dual circuit training, down-wind calls were given. On final a blue mower was operating a westerly direction, having entered the runway area since they took off. It was mowing directly adjacent to the bitumen. Due to the location of the mower, a go-around was initiated. The same occurred on the next circuit. Later when they returned, the mower had situated its self outside the gable-markers and the aircraft landed without further incident. |
