OCCURRENCE DETAILS SUBMITTED TO RAAUS: During circuit training, the instructor allowed the student to extend the downwind leg to show what happens when they get distracted or absorbed in their downwind checks, without realizing themselves that they had flown into restricted airspace. Instructor reminded to use ground based reference markers to ensure that the aircraft does not enter restricted airspace. Instructor was de-briefed by CFI in relation to incident. |

OCCURRENCE DETAILS SUBMITTED TO RAAUS: The pilot of a gyrocopter backtracked from mid-field of a runway whilst another aircraft was waiting at the hold. The aircraft waiting at the hold believed that they were first for departure and as such, entered and taxied around the gyrocopter. The aircraft then decided to take off in front of the gyrocopter.
This occurrence was reviewed with both pilots. The pilot of the aircraft has been educated on legal rights of aircraft on runway whilst the member of gyrocopter has been educated in relation to courtesy of conduct when operating with other aircraft at the hold. |

OCCURRENCE DETAILS SUBMITTED TO RAAUS: Whilst conducting dual training circuits an inbound call was heard from an aircraft from the north estimating circuit time "20”. The instructor looked at their watch and noted that it was already "22". Shortly after the student called downwind and heard the inbound aircraft making an overhead call with intention to join downwind. The instructor radioed they were late downwind and will be "number one", they recall a response indicating that the other aircraft would be number 2. Following a touch and go, the joining aircraft was identified to the right of them and slightly higher on approach for a landing on the opposite runway. The aircraft landed and cleared all runways. Pilots are reminded of the importance of maintaining regular radio communications and conducting a thorough look-out, particularly in the vicinity of an airfield. The joining aircraft reported that a possible radio issue may have contributed to this occurrence. The pilot of the joining aircraft identified that the time on his watch was not accurate this was updated to prevent inaccurate time reporting. |

OCCURRENCE DETAILS SUBMITTED TO RAAUS: The aircraft was returning to the airport from a cross country flight of approximately 1 hr duration. Prior to departure the pilot did one circuit and a safe touch and go. On return to the airport from the south, the pilot listened to the AWIS which reported wind as 13 kts from 260 deg. No other traffic was identified and the pilot elected to join base for runway 27. During landing whilst starting to flare, the aircraft suddenly veered to the left. The pilot attempted to correct the drift in order to regain tracking along the runway. The aircraft then banked to the right and the right main wheel contacted the ground and the aircraft pivoted forward. The prop struck the grass and the aircraft stopped quite suddenly in a nose-down position.
Review of this occurrence identified that the pilot experienced a loss of control on landing. The pilot is to complete further dual instructional flight before flying solo. Pilots are reminded of the importance of conducting a go-around in the event of an unstable approach in order to prevent the likelihood of a loss of control during landing. More information, including a 3-part video series on loss of control is available on the RAAus website. |

OCCURRENCE DETAILS SUBMITTED TO RAAUS: On approaching the circuit at South Grafton, a Jabiru was downwind turning base on runway 26. A second Jabiru was planning to make a direct approach and 3 mile final on 26 but called they would remain outside circuit and orbit to avoid conflict with the aircraft in the circuit. A Sierra called a 3 mile final on 26 making a direct approach from the north east. They entered late final cutting off the Jabiru. The pilot made a radio call indicating to the pilot of the Sierra that they had cut them off just prior to turning final and they conducted a go around. RAAus conducted interviews and determined possible radio readability and serviceability issues may have played a part in this incident. RAAus suggested the airport re-form a safety committee and have involved representatives from stakeholders at the airport to resolve future issues of this type. |

OCCURRENCE DETAILS SUBMITTED TO RAAUS: The flight was a dual training flight with a returning pilot who had not been active for 2 years. The aircraft departed and planned to maintain 2000 feet during flight. Whilst monitoring the student pilot during the return to the airfield in very turbulent conditions, the aircraft climbed to 2500/2600 and inadvertently entered Class C airspace. The instructor debriefed the student on the importance on maintaining altitude when transiting near or below class C airspace. The instructor was de-briefed by RAAus in relation to the incident and was able to generate a strategy to ensure future breaches of class C are avoided in the future. All pilots are reminded of the importance of conducting thorough pre-flight briefing and monitoring position and altitude during flight, particularly in complicated airspace, in order to avoid an airspace infringement. |

OCCURRENCE DETAILS SUBMITTED TO RAAUS: Prior to run ups, the pilot of a Jabiru had given a taxi call advising they were taxiing to runway 21. After runups in the run up bay, the aircraft taxied to the 21 holding point and held there whilst the pilot made a radio call with intentions to enter and line up on runway 21 and it included that the departure was to be to the south west climbing to 2500. Prior to entering they held for a Europa that was on short final touch and go. After it had passed the Jabiru they once again did a visual check, entered the runway and proceeded to do a turn to the east and conducted a 360 degree turn to visually check base and final prior to lining up on runway 21. The area was clear, and they were not in receipt of any radio calls. The pilot then commenced a take off roll applying full power and a few seconds later an aircraft landed over the top of them on the same runway.
This aircraft registration was later confirmed as a VH registered aircraft used for parachute jumps. The Jabiru pilot immediately cut power and applied full braking and requested that the aircraft transmit their call sign. The VH registered aircraft then vacated the runway. The pilot of the VH registered aircraft advised that they had not seen the Jabiru and admitted they had their aircraft nose high on the approach and that they were very sorry. They advised that they saw the Europa do a touch and go. They didn't admit to hearing the Jabiru's radio calls and they had not made any calls in the circuit to their knowledge. This occurrence was forwarded to CASA for review. |
