OCCURRENCE DETAILS SUBMITTED TO RAAUS: During the third session of circuits the student rounded out too high and despite being prompted by the Instructor, experienced a heavy landing, resulting in damage to the aircraft.
The FTS has implemented a policy of a minimum height of 200'AGL to conduct the exercise and to take account of the student workload and ability to manage this exercise after a complete circuit session. |

OCCURRENCE DETAILS SUBMITTED TO RAAUS: While flying from Derby WA to Bundaberg QLD to get routine maintenance done a Jabiru, by the pilots’ calculations there was enough fuel to reach Bundaberg but there was concern about going into the reserve. The pilot made the decision to divert to Mundubbera which was approx. 12nm W of Auburn State Forrest where the aircraft eventually completed an emergency landing.
The pilot side fuel tank on the wing gauge still showed a good amount of fuel however the PAX side tank viewed empty on the wing gauge The engine started to splutter and shut down. With carby heat on and pushing throttle in and out the pilot managed to restart it but this only lasted momentarily. The pilot had approx. 45- 60 secs of flight left when they saw what was thought to be a road through the forest however as they got closer it was a single phase high tension power line with a service road under it. The decision was made to land in the forest approx. 30-40m away from power lines with the sole intention of putting the plane between the trees to take the wings off and slow the speed of the decent/landing. As the aircraft came into the trees the pilot had to make two slight deviations, one to the left and one to the right, the main two trees the aircraft hit were not directly opposite each other. The aircraft then clipped some smaller trees, the pilot with the stick full back in the stall position tried to belly it into the trees.
Fuel was running from the wings once the aircraft came to rest. |

|
OCCURRENCE DETAILS SUBMITTED TO RAAUS: DEFECT: A 'kink' developed in fuel line resulting in fuel starvation on takeoff. A new fuel filter had been tested, installed and engine run-up performed on ground to test, which indicated normal operations. However, on take-off at approximately 50 feet AGL engine noticeably dropped revs. The pilot conducted a landing by closing the throttle, lowering the nose and selecting full flap on remaining 500 metres and taxied back to the hangar.
The new filter had been connected without noticing that the fuel line at the electric pump end had kinked due to it being enclosed in the center console and therefore not being visible. The new filter was marginally larger than the old one. Some fuel was getting through but not enough to satisfy normal takeoff requirements.
The pilot elected to shorted the fuel line from electric fuel pump to fuel filter by approximately 10mm thus straightening line and removing the kink. After conducting fuel flow tests the unit proceeded to producing maximum flow. |

|
OCCURRENCE DETAILS SUBMITTED TO RAAUS: The pilot completed a touch and go, when on upwind (at approx. 50 to 100ft), there was a bang and vibration from the engine. The engine was still running with some power at low revs. There was enough power remaining for the pilot to complete a circuit and land.
Engine cowls were removed and it was found that two through bolts on the number one cylinder had fractured. |

|
OCCURRENCE DETAILS SUBMITTED TO RAAUS: The approach was normal for a landing on RWY 18 at YWGT, and the aircraft had slowed to approximately 15Kts. The pilot applied right rudder to regain RWY centre line but over application resulted. This was combined with application of harsh braking to prevent RWY excursion. The result was roll to the right and pitch forward causing the propeller to strike the runway. A propeller strike inspection is therefore required to be carried out IAW Jabiru maintenance manual before further flight. |

On landing, as the aircraft was coming to a halt a strong whirly wind event lifted it off the ground and dropped it onto the nose wheel. PIC noted the controls were released to apply brake, resulting in into wind aileron not being held until the aircraft came to a stop. |

The aircraft veered to the left after the wheels touched down. When the aircraft exited the RWY the propeller and wings both impacted the grass.
The pilot has discussed this occurrence with the CFI and has also completed a successful flight review since. |

|
During a flight in the Port Macquarie area the pilot was hearing garbled calls from another aircraft and assumed it was an aircraft was operating at Taree, on the same CTAF but 60 km away on the other side of the Three Brothers mountains. After turning final, the PAX observed another aircraft overtaking them to the right, and there was another distorted call. The pilot realised that those calls were coming from an aircraft in the Port Macquarie circuit. The pilot then made a radio call that if the aircraft on final was transmitting, they were reading 1 and could not be understood, and another garbled response was heard. The flying school base then transmitted that they were also reading them 2. The pilot then landed uneventfully. |

|
The pilot was attempting to land and taxi at the first available taxiway, resulting in a hard landing. The aircraft developed pilot induced oscillation which resulted in damage to the nose gear.
OUTCOME: The pilot acknowledged for future operations, the aircraft must not be forced onto the ground, but landed using usual landing technique. |

|
A Jabiru aircraft entered the RWY whilst an aircraft conducting Regular Passenger Transport (RPT) operations was on approach.
Due to possible misunderstanding regarding the type of approach conducted (straight in approach), the Jabiru rolled through the taxiway holding point, but stopped short of the runway itself. The RPT aircraft landed but did not respond to any calls until in the parking area.
The pilot noted the RPT aircraft was lower on approach than expected and was reminded of the importance of "alerted see and avoid" when using radio at a Certified aerodrome where radio is required. |

|
A Jabiru landed on RWY19 when another Jabiru was landing on RWY01. The pilot of the second Jabiru was unaware the first was in the circuit and did not see it until just before touch down, this was due to the fact that it was flying directly out of the sun, (it was morning in mid-winter) and it appears that their radio was not working. The first Jabiru went "Grass Left" and the second hugged the RWY on the left side, they passed on opposite sides of the RWY.
Outcome: A phone meeting with all pilots and CFIs was held to analyse the relevant factors and determine courses of action to prevent a recurrence.
ERSA entry will be amended to recommend a preferred runway for nil wind operations.
RAAus created a short report to assist members to learn from this near collision event. |
