OCCURRENCE DETAILS SUBMITTED TO RAAUS: DEFECT: The engine was found to be missing on start-up. The pilot had just completed a circuit prior to the event with no identified issue. The engine was shut down and the flight cancelled. It was found that there was no compression in Cylinder 1. The cylinder head was removed to find that the exhaust valve seat was out of its proper place and holding the exhaust valve open.
A second-hand head was found and refurbished and fitted to the engine with no further problems identified. |

OCCURRENCE SUBMITTED TO DETAILS RAAUS: After a normal take-off roll on runway 20 at YMBD, the student pilot climbed to 200ft AGL and retracted the flaps.
Shortly after retracting the flaps, the student pilot pitched up to a normal climbing attitude. As the student pitched up, approximately 250-300ft AGL, the engine suddenly started running rough, with a significant vibration, almost to the point of shut down and the aircraft could no longer maintain altitude. The instructor took control of the aircraft and pitched down to the best glide speed, intending to land in a field. Shortly after pitching down, the engine completely shut down. The instructor attempted to deploy flaps but did not have time to extend them prior to commencing touchdown flare. The initial landing was good, however the remaining paddock for the landing roll was insufficient. Despite full brake pressure, the aircraft collided with a sheep fence and on impact with the fence, the aircraft flipped tail over nose. Both pilots exited the aircraft without further incident. |

OCCURRENCE SUBMITTED TO DETAILS RAAUS: The pilot of an RAAus aircraft was flying to Beverley when they were contacted by air traffic control to descend as military restricted airspace was coming up. The pilot acknowledged and descended to avoid the airspace and continued to fly to Beverley. The airspace in question is activated by NOTAM and when these were checked prior to departure, none were present for this airspace. It is possible that this airspace became active once in flight. |

|
OCCURRENCE SUBMITTED TO DETAILS RAAUS: On final approach to land on runway 36 just before over the runway, the aircraft was indicating 75 knots due to gusting winds. There was low cloud base around 2000ft. Passing piano keys of the runway, the aircraft was estimated 6ft above runway. Knowing that they were over the runway, the pilot pulled the power back to idle. The nose dropped, the pilot pulled stick back to level the aircraft, because they did not want to touch down on the nose wheel. Within seconds, the pilot heard a couple of little beeps from the stall warning horn. Immediately after that, the aircraft lost lift and sank to the ground, causing the aircraft to bounce. This resulted in collapsed nose wheel. |

|
OCCURRENCE SUBMITTED TO DETAILS RAAUS: On the initial taxiing call, the pilot identified that they were taxiing for runway 01, the reciprocal runway of what they were actually taxiing for. The pilot was then contacted by another aircraft that was on approach to Port Lincoln, and requested the windsock status, as they were going to track for a left base to runway 15.
The pilot responded saying that there was a relatively light crosswind for 01, but they meant to say 19. The pilot of the other aircraft called a circuit arrival time of .47 so to be well out of the way of the incoming traffic, they still had not picked up that they were making calls on the wrong runway designation.
On the upwind leg of runway 19, they could see the other aircraft approaching in the distance and made a call that they had them visual and that they would extend their current crosswind leg to remain clear. The pilot was confused as to why the other aircraft was not tracking direct to left base 19, not realising that it was because they had called 01 instead of 19. The pilot kept their aircraft visual at all times and proceeded to turn left downwind for 19, realising what they had done.
Both aircraft passed approximately 1000ft vertically and 500ft laterally from each other whilst they were turning downwind for 19 and joining right base for 01. By the time they had reached the departure end of downwind 19, the pilot had finally realised what they had done wrong and made a call to the other aircraft with apology. The pilot then continued its flight plan North.
The pilot involved had a mindset built up due to the wind favouring a particular runway. At the time of departure, the wind had shifted and was noted by the pilot and made a taxi call for the most into wind runway but called the opposing runway instead as this is what had stuck in his mind. It was on departure from the circuit that the error was realised. |

|
OCCURRENCE SUBMITTED TO DETAILS RAAUS: The pilot of an RAAus Jabiru was approaching for landing on runway 22, with a slight right-hand cross wind. The aircraft was lined up for a landing with 2-stages of flap and left rudder was used to straighten the aircraft just prior to landing. As the pilot was in the flare the aircraft yawed to the right (believed to be a gust), the aircraft’s left main wheel touched first, causing the aircraft to yaw to the right and then the left wing touched the main runway. The aircraft skidded to the left, off onto the adjacent grass runway causing the aircraft’s propeller to touch the ground. |

OCCURRENCE SUBMITTED TO DETAILS RAAUS: The pilot was joined for circuits at Bathurst Aerodrome. The pilot was on the wrong side as they joined for left-hand circuits and was told that they were on the wrong side.
The pilot rejoined for right hand circuit, and there was another aircraft in the circuit that the pilot had spotted and joined the aircraft. The pilot noticed that a second aircraft came in front of them but was lower in altitude and was at a higher speed. The pilot observed that the second aircraft was distant and not close to them in the circuit but became in front of them later at a lower altitude. |

|
OCCURRENCE SUBMITTED TO DETAILS RAAUS: Whilst the instructor was supervising the pilot on a check flight, they extended downwind too far and infringed CTR. The instructor informed the pilot to turn before the intersection which marked the edge of the restricted airspace, and the pilot advised they had it in sight. The pilot had looked at the wrong intersection, as they did not fly in the area for some time.
As the individual was experienced with the area, the instructor did not brief him regards to airspace even though he had not flown for a while . There is an airfield photo with airspace indicated in the club house and the instructor will not assume anything in future and always run individuals over it before they fly. |

|
OCCURRENCE SUBMITTED TO DETAILS RAAUS: The pilot was flying with a group to William Creek and from previous discussions, were with the understanding that there was a group clearance completed to fly through the airspace. The pilot presumed that they were included as the group knew that they were there and followed out after take-off and through the airspace. The pilot did make themselves known to the air traffic control and they did not say that they could not be there. The pilot was further unaware that they were not included in the flight plan.
Pilot has learned not to make assumptions and not rely on others. |

|
OCCURRENCE SUBMITTED TO DETAILS RAAUS: An instructor and student pilot were returning to the airfield from the training area. They were monitoring that 3 aircraft were taxiing for departure to Rollo’s field to the SE. As the inbound aircraft was approaching the Gawler Dam, the pilot of the lead outbound aircraft called that they were crossing the inbound lane at 2200'. The instructor asked his student pilot to stop descent.
The inbound aircraft was passing through about 2800' and by the time the descent was stopped they were at about 2600'. The instructor was aware of another inbound aircraft slightly behind and below them to their right. The instructor gained visual of the outbound aircraft on their right at about 1nm. The aircraft was still climbing, 90 degrees to their track, crossing from right to left. The instructor called the pilot of the outbound aircraft over the radio, confirming that they had them sighted and requested that they stop climbing. The instructor observed the aircraft commence levelling out but now the vertical separation was greatly reduced. The instructor of the inbound aircraft took control and made a sharp bank to the right to ensure separation. The two aircraft came quite close together as witnessed by the following inbound aircraft. |

OCCURRENCE DETAILS SUBMITTED TO RAAUS: The Jabiru 160 was on mid finals for runway 05, when a VH registered Socata TB20 overtook them, directly above them. The VH registered Socata TB20 then continued to descend in front of the Jabiru 160. The instructor took immediate action by diving to the right however the difference in approach speed of the two aircraft meant that the VH registered Socata TB20 rapidly moved away from the Jabiru 160 aircraft. The instructor immediately radioed the pilot of the VH registered Socata TB20 aircraft. |
