OCCURRENCE DETAILS SUBMITTED TO RAAUS: DEFECT: The right-hand wing tip had either struck a fixed object or been hit by another vehicle or aircraft. Scratches and damaged paint were visible on the right-hand wing tip. Additionally, the forward wing mount spar had become detached from the top skin of the wing, allowing the wing to flex by nearly 10 mm. |

OCCURRENCE SUBMITTED TO DETAILS RAAUS: During landing at YDUN, just on touchdown, the pilot experienced a sudden crosswind gust, lifting the left wing. When the pilot corrected harshly with the rudder, the front gear collapsed. The pilot slipped to a standstill, dragging the nose of the plane in the dirt and also collecting a plastic marker in the process. |

OCCURRENCE SUBMITTED TO DETAILS RAAUS: Whilst landing on Rwy 17 (L) close to the ground, a gust of wind caught the aircraft and slewed the aircraft to the left. As the pilot corrected the aircraft, the aircraft struck the ground heavily on the front wheel causing it to balloon and skew to the right. As the pilot was close to the grass strip (17R), they chose to land and taxi out. The aircraft was taxied back to hangarage. |

|
While turning downwind, the pilot of the VH aircraft noticed a Jabiru aircraft across the lake and inquired about its intentions, but received no reply. The Jabiru then cut in front of the VH aircraft, joining mid-downwind as the pilot was still early in the downwind leg. The pilot of the VH aircraft asked the Jabiru pilot why no radio call had been made and if the Jabiru pilot had noticed that the VH aircraft was already on downwind, especially after a previous "turning downwind" call. The Jabiru pilot replied that they must have forgotten to press the radio button, then proceeded to turn base without making another radio call. The pilot of the VH aircraft again asked about the base call, to which the Jabiru pilot admitted they had forgotten, prompting the pilot of the VH aircraft to express that this was unacceptable. The Jabiru pilot then apologized and stated he would go around. |

OCCURRENCE SUBMITTED TO DETAILS RAAUS: The instructor was instructing a student. Upon flaring on landing, the rudder violently locked to the left. The instructor grabbed the controls and pulled the control column back and added a trickle of power to stop the aircraft from bouncing. The aircraft landed 45 degrees to runway 23 with no damage or bounce.
The instructor kept kicking the right rudder pedal to get it free, the rudder pedals moved, and they taxied the aircraft to the maintenance hangar. |

|
OCCURRENCE SUBMITTED TO DETAILS RAAUS: The pilot left a flight note at base with incorrect SAR time. Time notified was 1 hour earlier that actual required SAR. Upon elapse of SAR, ground staff attempted to contact the pilot via mobile and VHF (CTAF frequency) unsuccessfully. The JRCC were notified and
15 minutes after notification to JRCC, the aircraft arrived back in CTAF. A subsequent call to JRCC was made to advise stand down. The aircraft landed without further incident. |

|
OCCURRENCE SUBMITTED TO DETAILS RAAUS: The pilot flew from YHEC to YTYH with a sightseeing orbit at the Byron Bay lighthouse. The pilot did a fly over at Byron Bay, 2 weeks before, when they called Ballina and was advised that there is no need to call Ballina if flying to Byron Bay. So the pilot did not make a call. When they finished the orbit over Byron Bay and wanted to proceed to Tyagara, they were advised by a parachute dropping plane that they were dropping at target and requested them to hold. The pilot held just south of Byron Bay until advised that it was safe to come into Tyagara from the West.
The pilot of the parachute dropping plane also advised the other pilot that BNE Center had been calling them which they had missed as they were on the local frequency. The pilot called back BNE Center and were told they hadn't called them, but maybe Ballina had. By that time, the pilot was on base for landing at Tyagara and did not have time to call Balina. Once on the ground, the pilot forgot to call Ballina. |

OCCURRENCE DETAILS SUBMITTED TO RAAUS: DEFECT: The engine was found to be missing on start-up. The pilot had just completed a circuit prior to the event with no identified issue. The engine was shut down and the flight cancelled. It was found that there was no compression in Cylinder 1. The cylinder head was removed to find that the exhaust valve seat was out of its proper place and holding the exhaust valve open.
A second-hand head was found and refurbished and fitted to the engine with no further problems identified. |

|
OCCURRENCE SUBMITTED TO DETAILS RAAUS: After a normal take-off roll on runway 20 at YMBD, the student pilot climbed to 200ft AGL and retracted the flaps.
Shortly after retracting the flaps, the student pilot pitched up to a normal climbing attitude. As the student pitched up, approximately 250-300ft AGL, the engine suddenly started running rough, with a significant vibration, almost to the point of shut down and the aircraft could no longer maintain altitude. The instructor took control of the aircraft and pitched down to the best glide speed, intending to land in a field. Shortly after pitching down, the engine completely shut down. The instructor attempted to deploy flaps but did not have time to extend them prior to commencing touchdown flare. The initial landing was good, however the remaining paddock for the landing roll was insufficient. Despite full brake pressure, the aircraft collided with a sheep fence and on impact with the fence, the aircraft flipped tail over nose. Both pilots exited the aircraft without further incident. |

|
OCCURRENCE SUBMITTED TO DETAILS RAAUS: The pilot of an RAAus aircraft was flying to Beverley when they were contacted by air traffic control to descend as military restricted airspace was coming up. The pilot acknowledged and descended to avoid the airspace and continued to fly to Beverley. The airspace in question is activated by NOTAM and when these were checked prior to departure, none were present for this airspace. It is possible that this airspace became active once in flight. |

|
OCCURRENCE SUBMITTED TO DETAILS RAAUS: On final approach to land on runway 36 just before over the runway, the aircraft was indicating 75 knots due to gusting winds. There was low cloud base around 2000ft. Passing piano keys of the runway, the aircraft was estimated 6ft above runway. Knowing that they were over the runway, the pilot pulled the power back to idle. The nose dropped, the pilot pulled stick back to level the aircraft, because they did not want to touch down on the nose wheel. Within seconds, the pilot heard a couple of little beeps from the stall warning horn. Immediately after that, the aircraft lost lift and sank to the ground, causing the aircraft to bounce. This resulted in collapsed nose wheel. |

|
OCCURRENCE SUBMITTED TO DETAILS RAAUS: On the initial taxiing call, the pilot identified that they were taxiing for runway 01, the reciprocal runway of what they were actually taxiing for. The pilot was then contacted by another aircraft that was on approach to Port Lincoln, and requested the windsock status, as they were going to track for a left base to runway 15.
The pilot responded saying that there was a relatively light crosswind for 01, but they meant to say 19. The pilot of the other aircraft called a circuit arrival time of .47 so to be well out of the way of the incoming traffic, they still had not picked up that they were making calls on the wrong runway designation.
On the upwind leg of runway 19, they could see the other aircraft approaching in the distance and made a call that they had them visual and that they would extend their current crosswind leg to remain clear. The pilot was confused as to why the other aircraft was not tracking direct to left base 19, not realising that it was because they had called 01 instead of 19. The pilot kept their aircraft visual at all times and proceeded to turn left downwind for 19, realising what they had done.
Both aircraft passed approximately 1000ft vertically and 500ft laterally from each other whilst they were turning downwind for 19 and joining right base for 01. By the time they had reached the departure end of downwind 19, the pilot had finally realised what they had done wrong and made a call to the other aircraft with apology. The pilot then continued its flight plan North.
The pilot involved had a mindset built up due to the wind favouring a particular runway. At the time of departure, the wind had shifted and was noted by the pilot and made a taxi call for the most into wind runway but called the opposing runway instead as this is what had stuck in his mind. It was on departure from the circuit that the error was realised. |

|
OCCURRENCE SUBMITTED TO DETAILS RAAUS: The pilot of an RAAus Jabiru was approaching for landing on runway 22, with a slight right-hand cross wind. The aircraft was lined up for a landing with 2-stages of flap and left rudder was used to straighten the aircraft just prior to landing. As the pilot was in the flare the aircraft yawed to the right (believed to be a gust), the aircraft’s left main wheel touched first, causing the aircraft to yaw to the right and then the left wing touched the main runway. The aircraft skidded to the left, off onto the adjacent grass runway causing the aircraft’s propeller to touch the ground. |

OCCURRENCE SUBMITTED TO DETAILS RAAUS: The pilot was joined for circuits at Bathurst Aerodrome. The pilot was on the wrong side as they joined for left-hand circuits and was told that they were on the wrong side.
The pilot rejoined for right hand circuit, and there was another aircraft in the circuit that the pilot had spotted and joined the aircraft. The pilot noticed that a second aircraft came in front of them but was lower in altitude and was at a higher speed. The pilot observed that the second aircraft was distant and not close to them in the circuit but became in front of them later at a lower altitude. |
